Bulk grains, cereals, rice, coffee or commodities in transit via a vessels hatch may be at risk of becoming infested during the voyage or may have been infested and placed in the hatch with diseases or Stored Product Insects (SPI's) such as beetles or moths.

These insects contaminate commodities with there eggs, shed exoskeletons and produce fecal matter which can lead to loss of quality, discarding of commodity, economic losses and forced demurrage. SPI's can also infest the empty vessel and its superstructure requiring fumigation.
